Before my kids started school, I searched all over Pinterest for “first day of school photo ideas”. I wanted to create a tradition but each year, I became bored with the same photo.
One year was a photo with a text overlay. The second year, I made a DIY chalkboard. This year, I’ll be using a letter board. I figured, why not try all the ideas every year? So that’s what I am going to do. And I want to give you some pretty awesome ideas so that you can have fun with it too!
Let’s face it, the first day of school is nerve splitting, worrisome, and trying day for us moms. Especially if your kid is going to school for the very first time.
So why not snap a cool photo to stare at while you contemplate driving by the school to “check on him”.

Our First Day of School Ever and my Huge #momfail
Let’s back up a little so I can explain our journey. When D. was 2 years and 10 months old, I enrolled him in an early learning center. I thought it was the right thing to do at the time.
He was smart, he was potty trained, and he met the minimum age for enrollment. He would have an early start to education and be able to socialize as well.
While I cringed at the price for early learning, I continued because that’s what my friends did and they liked it.
It seems that people are putting their toddlers in “preschool” at an earlier and earlier age. So I went with it.
Those first weeks were HORRIBLE. I immediately questioned my decision when he cried every time I dropped him off. The staff always ensured that it’s normal and that he would eventually outgrow it.
Fast-forward to 2 months in, he still cried at every drop-off. He would finally calm down after 10 minutes and slowly started to participate in class so I thought we were making progress.
Then, he caught one of those nasty school-kid colds and we were out for 2 weeks. When we tried to return, we had regressed so much and the crying continued.
I felt like such a bad mom for “forcing” him to go to school when he obviously wasn’t ready.
Long story short, I pulled him out of school and we were all much happier.
He’s now entering the first grade and loves school.
I decided to not even try early learning with J (my middle son). I knew he would thrive better at home with me as his teacher. He will now be entering preschool at 4 years old.

11 Awesome First Day of School Photo Ideas
#1. Simple Photo with Text Overlay of Favorites and Stats
Take a photo of your child in any setting you wish. You can add text to your photo on many different apps and platforms.
If you’d like to add text on your phone, check out SnapSeed, VSCO, and Afterlight. If editing on your computer, try Canva, Photoshop, or Lightroom.
#2. Customized First Day of School Chalkboards
I’ve seen a lot of these guys lately and there are so many options out there! If you are in a hurry to buy one, Amazon offers free 1-day shipping on many items for their Prime members!
Pro Savings tip: Buy one that is blank (like this one) so that you can use it for other occasions like birth announcements, baby milestones, other children, birthdays, and other accomplishments!
#3. Picture in Picture
This one is becoming very popular and for good reason. Plus you can use this method for any occasion! There are a few ways you can do this for the first day of school photos.
First, you can take a picture on their first day of school and frame it in an 8×10 frame. Then, take a picture of them on the last day of school with the previous photo. This one is super cute and can be started at any time.
Second, you can take a picture every year holding the frame from each previous year. Each picture will hold all the previous years before.
For example, 4th grade would hold a picture of your 3rd grader holding a picture of your 2nd grader holding a picture of your 1st grader holding a picture of your kindergartener. Whew! Say that 10 times fast.
#4. Photo-booth Prop
Any kind of photo booth frame is fun. While this one might take a little more time, it’s still a super cute and creative option. You can make it as advanced or as simple as you’d like.
#5. First Day of School Letterboards
You can never go wrong with letterboards. You can create literally anything on them. Plus, they can be reused for any occasion! You get to show off a creative side plus save money! Woohoo!
#6. Class of “Grad Year” Grow With Me T-shirt
Making a t-shirt is so easy to do. Buy a shirt you think your son will wear by the time he graduates, then put it on him on his first day of each grade and see how he grows into it each year. How fun is that?
#7. Easy First Day of School Printables
Printables are becoming a huge thing now where someone else does all the work and you simply just print it out and voila, you have a sign!
#8. Reusable Wooden Easels
I’m loving this option because you can reuse it for multiple kids and all sorts of different occasions. That means, budget-friendly!
#9. Sidewalk Chalk Art
It’s too freaken hot to lay on the sidewalk here in Arizona, especially in August where we are in the triple digits but this idea is still really cute!
Draw your child’s grade and have them lay next to it. You can take a picture each year with a different grade.
These are my top picks that I’ll be considering for my son’s first day of school. Do you have any other ideas? Share them below!
